Weekly Updates

December

December 4, 2020

Hello, SFE Families! Another great week at school, and it was fun to see our returning students! A short Weekly Update…

Parent Letter - Please see the attached letter from Dr. Sollitto and Mrs. Mayhew regarding distance learning.

Thank you to those who sent in gift cards to support our community families for the holidays! Your generous support is greatly appreciated, and your donations will help to make for a happy Christmas morning!

Masks! We are seeing lots of pretty dirty masks out there each day. Please be sure that your child wears a fresh mask daily. Additionally, extra masks in backpacks are super helpful for when one breaks or becomes soiled. Thank you for your help with this!

Virtual Days - just a reminder that students should be logged on ready to roll at 8:45 each virtual day. This applies to all students who are BDLA, those who are quarantined, and those who need to stay home and are well enough to participate in class. We appreciate your support in ensuring that your child is in class on time.

SFE Gear Orders - For those who ordered new SFE Gear, Impact will email you directly when your order is ready for pick-up. Thank you for your order and for your support!

From your PTA:

  • PTA Meeting - All are invited to join the PTA meeting next Wednesday, December 9th at 6:30pm via Zoom. Please see the meeting link below.

Digital Sign-Off Reminder - MUST BE COMPLETED FOR EVERY STUDENT! In order to not send home a ton of forms to fill out, it is all being done electronically this year, which is great! Several families still need to complete this form. If you have already completed it, there is no need to do it again.

After Illness Forms - If your child has been out sick for any reason, an After Illness Form must be completed and returned PRIOR to your child returning to the building. I have attached the form here again, and it can be completed and sent to Nurse Julie at pirrij@bsd-ri.net Thank you! Please call Nurse Julie if you have any questions about the form or about returning to school.

On-Going Reminders:

  • Wellness Screening Tool MUST BE FILLED OUT DAILY - For parents of in-school learners, you MUST complete the Wellness Screening Tool daily. The tool is accessible through Skyward Family Access or the Skyward Mobile app. For more information on Skyward Family Access, please see our Skyward website. If you need further assistance, please contact your child's school. Please see the attached instructions. Downloading the app and setting a reminder on your phone will help you to remember.

  • Please share any online learning photos with Laura MacKinnon at steerefarmyearbook@gmail.com

December 9, 2020

Good morning, SFE Families,

We are certainly in tough times, aren’t we? We continue to be amazed at how this pandemic has altered our everyday lives, and sometimes it seems as if there is no end in sight. Cases continue to rise, schools and business are again closing, and people everywhere are still being asked to stay home and stay away from others. We were again reminded of these conditions and necessary life modifications last night when our school committee voted to return to Distance Learning beginning today. This isn’t easy for sure, and here at Steere Farm, we all recognize the difficulties. Having students in school is by far the best thing for them, and we recognize that as well. However, we are very fortunate to be able to have school each day in the form of virtual school because there is still an opportunity for teaching and learning. In the pandemic of 1918, schools were shut down completely, with no teaching and learning – for a long time! With that, we are so fortunate for what we are able to do.

All of us at Steere Farm recognize that Distance Learning can be difficult, and we are here to help. If your child has trouble connecting to the Internet, we can help. If your child will not attend virtual meets, we can work with you to find a solution. If your child is struggling to turn in work, again, we can help. We also recognize that many students are doing super well while in the Distance Learning environment. We see kids that are in their Meets on time and participating each day, who have completed and submitted work, and who ask for help as needed. Our teachers are working hard, and many are working from home with their own children who are out of school as well. Teachers continuously plan and make sure that links are working. They reach out to those who are struggling or absent from Meets. They help parents navigate links and websites, and they support frustrated parents. I will also tell you that our teachers very much appreciate the positive emails that they receive from all of you – they truly do. Is everything perfect? No, nothing is. But…all of us strive to make Distance Learning the most positive experience for our students, and we are always reflecting and adjusting as we go along.

Over the next several days in Distance Learning, I ask for your help and your patience. I ask that you set a tone for learning in your home, that you have your child online each day at 8:45, and that he or she remains online for the entire school day. Students will have breaks throughout the day, just as they do in school, but they need to have the stamina to remain online and we ask that you remind and encourage them to do so. Screen fatigue is real, and our teachers are very mindful of providing breaks and independent work time off screen. I also ask that your child is dressed appropriately and sitting at a table or desk - not lying in bed or on the couch, and that he or she eats breakfast before 8:45. Attendance is taken every day, and if your child signs on for a few minutes in the morning, then signs off or doesn’t respond throughout the day, he or she will be marked absent. Participation is important! Also, have your kiddos head outside during recess and after the school day! Fresh air and exercise is important! If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher or to me at any time, and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Please also remember that if you email your child’s teacher during the school day, he or she will be actively teaching and may not respond right away. I will continue to send out my Weekly Updates to keep you informed, so please watch for those each Friday.

Distance Learning is temporary. How temporary, we don’t know. Our schools may be closed, but teaching and learning never stops. We do know that our kids will be back in school full time, all day, all year, and we all look forward to that. Until then, Distance Learning is our reality and we know that reality isn’t always easy. We need to trust in the process, rely on one another, and reach out for help. We will get through this together, I’m positive about that. Thank you for your patience and your support.

December 11, 2020

Hello, SFE Families! Well, we pivoted back into Distance Learning without missing a beat. Thanks to our students for working so hard, thanks to our parents for help and support, and thanks to our teachers for all they are doing.

The Tech Drive-Thru is open from 7:30-9am, Tuesday through Friday. No appointment is necessary - you can just head over to the Auditorium Entrance at the Burrillville High School.

Please see the lunch program flyer attached. Lunches are available at the Callahan School each day from 11-12:30.

Some reminders for Distance Learning…

  • Create a quiet work space with limited distractions. Television in the background is very distracting not only to your child, but also to other students and the teacher in the Meet. Also, please be aware that when your child’s mic is on, the whole class and teacher can hear what’s happening in your home (crying baby, barking dog, arguing parents, fighting siblings, etc.). Life happens, we understand...we just want you to be aware.

  • Please ensure that this quiet work space is at a table or desk, not a couch or bed. Any student seen in bed will be reminded by the teacher to move to a table.

  • No toys or pets while in live classes

  • Please be sure that Chromebooks are charged and ready to go

  • No phones or other devices. No recording or picture taking.

  • Have necessary supplies ready nearby

  • Come appropriately dressed - no pajamas

  • Be ready to participate in discussions, and follow directions of the teacher with regards to turning mic and/or camera on or off.

  • Eat breakfast before class starts. Students will be given a snack and lunch break.

  • Please be on time for class!

  • Have an “I CAN” attitude!

  • Do your very best, enjoy, and have fun!

Please have your kiddos take some down time after their online classes - play outdoors, read a book, put a puzzle together, play a board game, or make some brownies!

As always, please reach out to me or your child’s teacher if you have any questions! Have a good weekend! Stay safe and be well!

Hello, SFE Families!

Report Cards: Report cards are now ready for viewing online. Please go to http://www.bsd-ri.net/for-parents-and-students/skyward and if you are having trouble viewing your child’s report card, please email me at lyonsj@bsd-ri.net

Distance Learning: Parents - this isn’t always easy, as I’ve discussed here before. Distance learning is harder now with the holidays right around the corner - kids are excited and can often struggle to remain engaged in their daily school activities and responsibilities. That said, however, we are seeing lots of absences, lots of tardies, and lots of kids turning off their camera and not engaging. Please remind your child that this is real school for sure - we are taking attendance seriously, and we are taking school work seriously. I have been making phone calls home daily to far too many parents regarding attendance and expectations for online learning. Thank you in advance for reminding your kiddos about this! We will continue to do the same.

Return to School in January: As shared by Dr. Sollitto - “...we will resume distance learning on January 4th and continue it for that week. On January 7th, our high-need special education students who are eligible for in-person services will report to school buildings for the remainder of the week. On January 11th, we will resume our partial schedule for all other students. This means that we will resume our virtual Mondays for all students.” “Grades PK-5 will attend in-person school Tuesday through Friday. This is still subject to change based on positivity rates and other pandemic related factors. If changes must be made, we will notify you as soon as possible.”

Spirit Week: We are having a Holiday Spirit Week next week, so please have your child join in on the fun!

  • Monday - Holiday PJs Day

  • Tuesday - Holiday Hat Day

  • Wednesday - Ugly Sweater Day

We Need Yearbook Pictures! Please send pictures to Laura MacKinnon at llumack@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance - we will love to see them in our yearbooks in June!!

The Tech Drive-Thru is open from 7:30-9am, Tuesday through Friday. No appointment is necessary - you can just head over to the Auditorium Entrance at the Burrillville High School. The Tech Drive-Thru will be closed on Distance Learning Snow Days.

Donated Desks and Chairs: I have recently learned about some desks and chairs (donated from a local college) that are available to those in need. Please let me know asap if you are interested.

Snowman Pictures! Thanks for all of the great pictures! A few snowmen, but all of the pics are awesome! Sledding, shoveling, dog and goats (love it!), building snow animals and caves, and warming up with a cup of hot cocoa - what a fun day!! If you haven’t posted your snowman picture to our Padlet - please do so! https://padlet.com/lyonsj10/u5c96gpz4nmmpsst

As always, please reach out to me or your child’s teacher if you have any questions! Have a good weekend! Stay safe and be well!

Wishing all of our SFE families a happy and healthy, and

MUCH BETTER New Year!

Hello, SFE Families! I hope you all had wonderful holidays and a restful break! We’re back and ready to roll!

Return to School in January: Distance learning will begin on Monday, January 4th and continue for the remainder of the week. Our high-need special education students who are eligible for in-person services will report to school on January 7th for the reminder of the week. We will resume our partial schedule for all other students on January 11th, and Mondays will remain as virtual Mondays for all students. In-person schooling will begin on Tuesday, January 12 for our in-person students.

Distance Learning Reminders: I cannot stress the importance of having your child engaged in their online learning. I recognize that this is not optimal learning for all students, but it is real school and we take it very seriously. Attendance is also taken very seriously, and I ask that you ensure attendance each day, for the full day. I will continue to make phone calls to those parents of students who are chronically absent, who continuously turn off their cameras and do not participate online, or who do not turn in any work. Honestly, the vast majority of parents that I call firmly believe that their child is online and completing work - and they are very surprised to hear from me. Please check on your child frequently to be sure they are doing what they should be doing. Feel free to reach out to me or your child’s teacher should you need any help or support.

School Pictures: Many parents have emailed asking about school pictures, and while I have not received a shipping notification as of yet, I will send updated information as soon as I know more.

The Tech Drive-Thru is open from 7:30-9am, Tuesday through Friday. No appointment is necessary - you can just head over to the Auditorium Entrance at the Burrillville High School. The Tech Drive-Thru will be closed on Distance Learning Snow Days.

As we start off 2021, here’s hoping for a new and different year for us all! Happy New Year! Stay safe and be well!

Return for In-Person Students: Our in-person students will be back in school on Tuesday, January 12th. Please remind your child about distancing guidelines and the wearing of masks. Also, please remember to send in extra masks. Lastly, we plan to go outside for recess as long as the weather and chill factor hold, so appropriate winter clothing is a must!

BDLA Students: Just a reminder about online etiquette. Please ensure that your child is up, dressed, and present - ready for a day of learning every day! This is real school - attendance, participation, and work completion are expected.

Quarantine Updates: Please see the email from Dr. Sollitto and Mrs. Mayhew that came out today regard quarantine updates.

School Pictures: Pictures are FINALLY in! Yay! School pictures will be sent home with in-person students on Tuesday. BDLA families may pick up school pictures on Monday, January 11th between 9 and 2, or Tuesday through Friday from 9:30-4 in order to avoid arrival and dismissal times. • If you traveled from a country outside the US, RIDOH recommends testing on day 5 of quarantine or later. If you have a negative result, you may shorten your quarantine to 7 days. ***BSD is following this recommendation

  • Even with a negative test result, you still need to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days after travel, wear a mask any time you’re near people you don’t live with, and follow physical distancing guidelines.

Our staff needs to rest and rejuvenate, and they need to get off of their computers and get outside for some fresh air as well! Enjoy the week!!!

February Vacation Travel Information: Anyone intending to travel over February vacation, which includes both weekends, must follow the updated RIDOH guidelines:

Quarantine for 10 days:

  • Anyone coming to Rhode Island from a country outside of the US or a hot spot within the US must quarantine for 10 days.

  • If you traveled from a hot spot within the US, you can end quarantine with a negative result from a test taken after you arrived or no more than 72 hours before you arrived.

  • If you traveled from a country outside the US, RIDOH recommends testing on day 5 of quarantine or later. If you have a negative result, you may shorten your quarantine to 7 days.

  • Even with a negative test result, you still need to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days after travel, wear a mask any time you’re near people you don’t live with, and follow physical distancing guidelines.

For Parents of BDLA Students: When we return on the 23rd, we are looking for our BDLA students to be more engaged and invested in their daily expectations, including participating in all of their Meets, completing assignments, and being present. Our BDLA attendance has taken a tremendous turn, and parents, we need your help in ensuring that your children are engaging with us online every day. I continue to recognize that attending school online full-time is a challenge, and I can appreciate the struggles that go along with it. However, it’s our job to ensure that your children are receiving their grade level curriculum to prepare them for their next grade level (which is coming quickly!!), and we can only teach them if they are present and engaged. We need to see your kids on screen, we need to hear their voices, and we need to see their work...this way we can better understand what they are learning, or not learning, and know how we can help them best. We need your support in reminding your child that this is real school. Please reach out to your child’s teacher, or to me, if you have questions or if we can help. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.

IT’S MORE THAN A MEAL APPLICATION: Your participation in the meal application process affects many areas. The application process provides the School Department with the number of children who are eligible for either free or reduced meals. This information has a direct impact on State and Federal funding that the school department uses to fund the annual budget. The more applications that are completed are likely to increase the amount of funding for educational programs.

Please be aware that the School Department has a deadline of March 5, 2021; to report meal application numbers to the state. Burrillville School District asks that ALL families complete our meal application to ensure continued funding to support ALL students in our district. If you have already filled out our Meal Benefit Application online we thank you! If you have not already please go to our BSD website at: http://www.bsd-ri.net/

Under the Parents and Students tab you will find Burrillville Youth Nutrition and there you can click on the link to our online application. Or simply go to: https://www.myschoolapps.com/ here you will be able to search for The Burrillville School District and begin the online process.

Thank you, from The Burrillville School District and The Burrillville Youth Nutrition Office

Survey Works Survey! It’s that time again, when we ask that our families take the time to fill out the Survey Works survey. This information helps us to know what we’re doing well and where we may need to improve. The survey opens for families on Tuesday, January 19th. Please click on this link http://surveys.panoramaed.com/ride and use the access code bit.ly/ridefamily.

Golden Tickets Drawings from Mr. Feinstein are Back!! If you still have your Golden Ticket (unfortunately we were not provided with any extra tickets), then you can start watching for winning numbers. Here’s how it works…

  • Random drawing of 5 new winning numbers each Monday, beginning January 25th, to be announced on WPRI Channel 12 News at 4:30 p.m.

  • Winning numbers will then be posted each Tuesday morning on our Feinstein Virtual Club and Facebook page and displayed for the remainder of the week.

  • Winning numbers are valid for one week! (*Important to check the numbers each week — once winning numbers are gone, they're gone!)

  • Jr. Scholars with a winning ticket number should inform their teacher/school immediately and show them their winning ticket (photo or in-person acceptable).

  • Their school should contact the Feinstein Foundation as soon as possible with the winning ticket claim! (*Winning tickets must be claimed within 7 days of the numbers posting.

The Tech Drive-Thru is open from 7:30-9am, Tuesday through Friday. No appointment is necessary - you can just head over to the Auditorium Entrance at the Burrillville High School. The Tech Drive-Thru will be closed on Distance Learning Snow Days.

Lastly, we had a super fun Kindness Week, and it was wonderful to see so much kindness in our school and virtually! There were a lot of fun activities to remind us about the importance of being kind, but we all need to remember to be kind ALL of the time, not just during Kindness Week. During the week ahead, have a wonderful February vacation, and remember to READ and to be KIND!
